Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa was born at Bauchi in 1912. He was a teacher by profession and trained in the London University Institute of Education. He was elected to the House of Assemble in the Northern Region in 1946 and in 1947 he became one of the first representatives of the Northern Region in the Central Legislative Council located in Lagos. He soon became the minister of works and transport and later the first prime minister of Nigeria in 1957. He was assassinated near Ifo in January 1966 during the first military coup in Nigeria.
