PRACTICAL CHRISTIANITY AND PRACTICAL POLITICS: The Frequently Asked Questions

Question:

I am not convinced that it is possible for a Christian to serve under an unbeliever and not compromise his faith. Could it be that all those Christian serving under unbelievers are pretenders?

Response:

It is possible for a believer to serve under an unbeliever and still retain his salvation. Only very few situations can be worse than those that confronted people like Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, yet they were able to maintain their integrity in the Lord in the face of daunting challenges under a totalitarian system where the king can do and undo.

Question:

Most believers that served under unbelieving kings in the Bible did not resign their appointment. At what point or on which ground should a Christian resign his or her appointment when serving under an unbeliever?

Response:

First, any believer in government must be extremely sensitive and in the spirit all the time in order to receive and decode urgent information from the Holy Spirit. Because the devil is very cunning, believers are not supposed to resign at any slight threat; otherwise the Devil will gain advantage over us. Counsel must be sought from experienced and qualified persons and confirmation received from the Holy Spirit before taking a step to resign an appointment. However, only believers that have fully yielded to God will be able to survive in this case, not those tied down to the office based on personal gains. We must also note that it is not every issue that calls for resignation. For instance, Daniel wouldn’t have resigned because the king was worshipping idol, but he could have resigned if told that the only way he would retain his office was to worship the idol. Similarly, Pharaoh was not worshipping Jehovah, the God of Israel, but that does not stop Joseph from working under him. Joseph can’t resign because his boss worshipped idol or because any of the food items he used his own wisdom to gather is used as part of sacrifice for idols. But he must resist any attempt to make him worship idol, while doing everything that will allow God to prove himself to the unbelieving leader that Jehovah alone is the Living God. One ugly experience I had a few years ago on hurried resignation devastated me for more than a year. I had resigned on the assumption that I had the leading to do so, only for an agent of the kingdom of darkness to walk into my house a few months later to tell me that she and her cohorts were responsible for the signal that led to my resignation for the singular reason that I was disturbing them and they wanted to destroy my financial based to weaken my Christian life. I had to call a trusted friend who is a fellow minister of God to engage in serious spiritual battle before I was restored to the same office without making any fresh application.

Question:

I think the issue is not just being a Christian, as there are many self professed ‘born again’ Christians today. The real question is, can a Christian politician make heaven?

Response:

Are you in doubt about the fact that people like Moses, David, Daniel, Esther, Deborah, etc walked with God? These also were largely civil leaders. The main problem Christians have with politics in general is our mindset. A Christian politician can make heaven, just like any other Christian. All Christians without exception thrives on the holiness of Christ that is imputed on us and on the mercy of God while we have the obligation to obey God to the last letter. It is not the works of our hands that qualifies us for this grace. I should explain this further to avoid confusion or misconception: A Pastor in one of the best churches you know may be preaching from a pulpit donated by a ritual killer without knowing it, except the Holy Spirit chose to reveal this (This is just one example out of several possibilities that are realities in several worship centers). The fact that he does not know does not justify him, after all Joshua was not part of Achan’s mischief, but the whole of Israel bore the consequences. Now, if he or she trusts in his or her own righteousness the sin will be visited upon him or her, just as the President of a nation will be berated for corruption in the police force though he is not a Police Officer and even if he just assumed the office as the President two weeks ago! The Lord gave me a little insight into this concept in 1995. I had been an accuser of God for long before he showed me mercy. I have once told a man to his face shortly after praying seriously in agony that only a foolish God will answer that kind of prayer because he was disturbing the rest of us in the room. However, when the Lord took over my life I seriously sought for his mercy and did everything possible to separate myself from sin. I was even ready to die than to lie. So much that even with the callousness of the then military junta I was still able to tell the security operatives of General Sanni Abacha God’s mind concerning his government even when they openly threatened to terminate my life. However, one night, as I was about to go and sleep, with all humility I told the Lord once again if there is anything I am still doing wrong he should please reveal to me so that I can prayerfully adjust, because by then I knew nothing else that I was doing wrong. It’s not long that my files were brought out in that clear revelation and I saw that two volumes were actually spotlessly clean. However, the third volume which is up to the first two files combined has dots of stain all over. I was asked to come and clean up the stains but as in my waking life I could not make any adjustment on that file, until the Lord Jesus stepped forward to bail me out. I latter got to understand that it may even be a sin to be speaking in tongue while you are absent minded! The rule for heaven-bound Christian is straightforward and does not respect persons or ministry: Give your life to Jesus – Strive to live holy at all times – Don’t ever trust in that your holiness because it will always be short of God’s expectation whether you know it or not – Constantly trust in the holiness of Jesus that is imputed on you (this will not work if you deliberately commit sin). The above is attainable by any serious Christian politician if truly called by God, so, Christian politicians or civil leaders can make heaven – David made it, so did Moses. You too can make it.

Question:

Why is it that many politicians are stingy?

Response:

While there are no statistical data to substantiate this claim, I want to believe that such assertion is largely part of the misconceptions and hazards of a political ministry, especially in poor nations. While peoples’ mind have been conditioned to belief for instance that they must always give money to pulpit ministers, even if they are billionaires (which is right), the same mind has been trained to believe they must always collect money from politicians, even if they are not so rich or have just borrowed the money they are spending (which is wrong). This is not the same in developed countries where the bulk of the money spent on elections come from the masses and corporate bodies. Without any gainsaying, I want to submit that many ‘successful’ politicians in developing countries have gone beyond been generous to the level of being wasters, because of the terrible mindset of both the politicians and the electorate.

Further Questions and Remarks: Questions on Christianity and Politics are too numerous to be fully addressed at a go here.
